Anxiety, Relationship and LGBT+ Therapy in Connecticut

Welcome!

Whether you’re navigating anxious thought loops, gender and sexuality challenges, or feeling stuck in unproductive relationship patterns, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Therapy can be a space to slow down, hear yourself clearly, and reconnect with what matters most.

I work with LGBTQIA2S+ and neurodivergent adults, young adults figuring out life transitions, people coping with anxiety, and couples or polyamorous partners wanting to deepen communication and build intentional relationships. I also offer Brainspotting, a mind-body tool that helps quiet mental noise and access deeper insight when words fall short.

Whatever brings you here, all parts of you are welcome. Let’s work together to create the change you’re ready for.

Welcome! My name is Emma Costa (She/Her)

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate (LMFT-A) and Brainspotting Clinician who offers virtual therapy for adults in Connecticut who want a space to feel seen, supported, and free to explore who they are, without judgment.

I use a collaborative, affirmative approach that integrates Brainspotting, talk therapy, and curiosity to help you reconnect with yourself and move toward healing.

  • Yes. This resource list was not created by myself, but is still valuable. Please review the disclaimer on the first page before proceeding.

This is a thorough list of LGBTQ+ centered, inclusive, and/or friendly resources, establishments, social groups, events, and more in the hopes that the queer and trans community in CT can find spaces that meet their needs and/or where they can connect with fellow community members.

  • Due to licensure restrictions, I can only provide therapy to adults physically located in Connecticut, United States.

  • I work with adults (18+). I am happy to refer you to a child specialist if needed.

  • All of my sessions are currently taking place weekly via a HIPAA compliant video platform. I do not offer in-person therapy.

  • Virtual therapy offers flexibility, accessibility, and at-home comfort. Clients can meet with their therapist from the privacy of their own home, eliminating the need to travel or take extra time off work. This makes it easier to fit therapy into busy schedules and allows people in rural or underserved areas to access care they might not otherwise receive.

Research shows that virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy for many concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship issues. The therapeutic relationship (the most important factor in successful therapy) can be built just as strongly over video.

  • I offer weekly and biweekly sessions using a timeshare model of the same weekday/time each meet. Intensives are offered in 1-3 day sessions. Your session time will be reserved for you, until our work together is completed.

  • I am not in-network with any insurance providers.

Depending on your insurance coverage policy, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement after paying your private rate from your insurance through the use of Out of Network Benefits. If you qualify, I can provide you with superbills (a receipt) for this purpose. A diagnosis is required to submit a claim for reimbursement.

Check to see if you can get reimbursed HERE or use the same benefit-checker below this FAQ.

  • How Insurance Impacts Clients

Insurance requires me to give you a mental health diagnosis that becomes part of your permanent medical record, even if one doesn’t fully fit your experience or isn’t clinically necessary. This can be especially risky for people in sensitive professions such as pilots, medical professionals, military personnel, or anyone with a security clearance, where a documented diagnosis may impact licensure, job eligibility, or career advancement. Insurance companies may also limit the number of sessions they cover, require justification for continued care, and request access to your records, which compromises your confidentiality. By working privately, we can focus on your goals without outside interference, labeling, or time constraints.

    How Insurance Impacts Providers

Insurance pays therapists far below a livable rate, despite the high level of education, training, and care this work requires. They can also issue “claw-backs,” where they demand repayment for sessions months or even years after they were provided, creating financial instability for providers and potential disruptions in care for clients. Insurance also requires constant justification for services, which results in providers spending hours weekly completing paperwork and negotiating with insurances to ensure their clients get the care they need. This impacts client’s quality of care, because the provider is then unable to use that time to better research best ways to assist their client and prepare for sessions. By staying independent, I can offer consistent, ethical care that puts your needs first, not the insurance company’s bottom line.

  • Paying for therapy out of pocket can bring up a lot. Sticker shock. Doubt. Anxiety about whether it will be “worth it.” Those reactions make sense.

Therapy is considered an investment because it is not a product you consume once. It is a process that can change how you relate to yourself, your emotions, your relationships, and your patterns over time. It is a process that has the potential to make generational impact.

What clients are paying for is not just a 50-minute conversation. They are paying for a licensed professional’s training, ongoing consultation, ethical responsibility, and the emotional labor required to hold complex material safely. They are also paying for confidential, protected time and space that exists solely for their growth.

Unlike a subscription or a service you use indefinitely, therapy is often time limited. Many people come in with specific goals, work toward them, and eventually reach a place where therapy is no longer needed or becomes less frequent.

Therapy does not guarantee outcomes, and it is not a quick fix. But for many people, it becomes a meaningful investment in long term emotional health, relational stability, and quality of life.

If you are unsure whether therapy is the right investment for you right now, that is okay. I also want to name that therapy is not equally accessible to everyone, and cost alone can be a deciding factor. That doesn’t mean you don’t value your mental health. It means you are navigating real financial constraints.

A consultation is a space to ask questions, talk through concerns, and decide whether this feels like a fit. For you.
